In celebration of National Black Business Month
, we’re shining a light on one of our favorite go-to spots to get a caffeine boost, Hilltop Coffee
Founded by Inglewood native, Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan, who call themselves, “curators of vibes,” Hilltop Coffee is a Black-owned business located in Inglewood, CA that’s become a popular space for the community to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while getting into their creative zone. We spent the day with Tara King, marketing manager of Hilltop, who gave us a private tour of the coffee shop, which has become a go-to for us at Michael Stars.
Inspired by its location on the popular hillside street Slauson, Relan and Hagos created the slogan, Find your Hilltop: Coffee for the Climb because “everyone is working towards something.”
Its December 9th, 2019 opening made such an impact in the community that Ajay and Yonnie partnered with writer & actress Issa Rae. “I’ve always wanted a coffee shop in my neighborhood. Coffee shops facilitate productivity in so many ways, they facilitate collaboration.” -said Rae on the venture.
Issa Rae wasn’t the only one who saw something great in Hilltop. The Los Angeles Rams also showed their support for the coffee shop and community by paying the tab for all customer orders one morning at the start of the pandemic.
Hilltop Coffee quickly became a hub for the Black community to enjoy delicious coffee and gourmet dishes like their Bangin’ Breakfast Sandwich and Matcha-Chata.
The community has showed true solidarity and support since Hilltop shut its doors due to COVID-19. Although coffee goers can no longer sit tableside while enjoying smooth sounds of live music, customers from the neighborhood and all over are keeping staff busy with takeout and delivery orders daily.
Every visit to Hilltop Coffee, is more than just enjoying caffeinated drinks & delicious food.
With a 5% fee added to every purchase, you’re helping pay employees above minimum wage.
This cool coffeeshop has become a favored go-to at Michael Stars headquarters for getting our caffeine boost in the morning and afternoon.
A few of our menu favorites include the Buffalo Cauliflower Bowl, Lavender Latte, and the Salmon Drop Top.
If you’re in the Inglewood or View Park area, make sure you visit Hilltop and grab yourself some coffee to-go. Not in the area? That’s okay, because not only is an Eagle Rock location coming soon but Hilltop is also launching online ordering for those who want to enjoy merch and fresh coffee beans from the comfort of their home.
Special shout out to the marketing manager of Hilltop Coffee, Tara King, for allowing us to snap photos of her & the crew!
